Born into a racing family, with his father Antonio a multiple Brazilian touring car champion, Cristiano was racing karts as soon as he was old enough. Brazilian champion in 1991, he claimed the Brazilian Formula Ford and Formula Three titles before heading to race in British Formula Three in 1995. He ranked eighth in that and then eighth in Formula 3000, but it was only when he headed to the United States in 1997 that his career regained momentum, as Cristiano ranked third in Indy Lights before winning the title the following year. This propelled him into Indy Cars and he was a race winner in 2000 before winning the 2002 ChampCar crown for Newman-Haas Racing. Doing so with a Toyota engine impressed the manufacturer enough to offer him a crack in its Formula One team in 2003. He led the British Grand Prix after an early scramble of the order and his best results were two a sixth places, but his form fell away in 2004 and he returned to Champ Cars, surviving hitting a deer in 2006.
