A double World Kart Champion, Jan won the Formula Ford Festival in 1992. He walked away with the 1994 British Formula Three series, with 14 wins in 18 races for Paul Stewart Racing. McLaren signed him as test driver for 1995, while Mercedes fielded him in the International Touring Car series. Jan finished runner-up to Bernd Schneider.

He got his Formula One break when he stood in at McLaren for the 1995 Pacific Grand Prix when Mika Hakkinen had an appendicitis, but then moved Stateside to race the Indy Car circuit with Penske. Jackie Stewart brought him back to Formula One when he signed him for Stewart Grand Prix for 1997, with Jan enduring a run of engine failures.

With his form in early 1998 sketchy, he was replaced by Jos Verstappen and has since returned to the US to race sports cars. He also races touring cars at home in Denmark and won the 2003 title.
