After winning the Japanese Formula 3000 title in 1988, a dreadful first year in Formula One in 1989 in which he failed to qualify for Zakspeed was erased by some superb drives for Larrousse in 1990, including a finish that brought him to the podium at his home grand prix.
However, a financially-strapped season with Larrousse did nothing to help his reputation, which was damaged further by two years with Footwork, when he was outpaced by Michele Alboreto and Derek Warwick. Aguri shared a Ligier drive with Martin Brundle in 1995, but was outpaced. Then, having run teams in Formula Nippon and the Indy Racing League, Aguri chased Honda for engines and formed the Super Aguri Racing Formula One team for 2006.
