A splendid year in Formula Three - when he impressed the grand prix community in the support race at Monaco in 1986 - marked him as a man to watch, and he won the Formula 3000 title at his first attempt in 1987. However, his first three years in Formula One were with tail-end teams, and it was not until he joined Tyrrell in 1991 that his ability became clear.
The car was not quite as good as he expected, however, and, after a great performance at Monaco, when he qualified second to Ayrton Senna, and a superb second in the next race at Montreal, Stefano faded badly. Despite this disappointment, he was signed up to drive for Jordan in 1992, but the project dramatically failed to gel, and Stefano's Formula One career came to an end. He later shone in touring cars, finally showing the speed that people always knew he possessed.
