Sandro Nannini's Formula One career was cut short when an arm was severed in a helicopter accident. Micro-surgery reattached the limb, and Alessandro became a race-winner in the German Touring series. Given his chance in Formula One with Minardi, he was more than a match for Andrea de Cesaris before joining Benetton in 1988, where he sometimes outpaced team-mate Thierry Boutsen. He won in Japan in 1989 when Ayrton Senna was disqualified and, after being outshone by Nelson Piquet, came of age in the second part of 1990. He was pipped by Senna in Germany after a brilliant drive, and lost in Hungary after being elbowed out of the way by Senna. But then, after he finished third in Spain, and a contract with Ferrari was rumoured, came the helicopter crash. Fighting back valiantly, he starred for Alfa Romeo on the international touring car scene until 1997, when he joined Mercedes' works sports car team.
