This tall, serious Frenchman made his debut with a Renault in the 1984 Portuguese Grand Prix. Halfway through 1985, he replaced Andrea de Cesaris at Ligier, scoring an excellent third place at the end-of-year Australian Grand Prix. Philippe's first full year came with Tyrrell in 1986, and he spent the next two years with the British team, for whom he was usually outpaced by his team-mates. A move to AGS in 1988 revitalized him, and he impressed with some excellent drives, including a superb showing in qualifying at Imola. He was to stay with AGS in 1989, but a heavy crash in testing at Jacarepagua left him paralysed.
