Profile
Perennially underrated, Pierluigi became a respected member of the grand prix fraternity. After winning the European Formula Three title in 1983 and failing to qualify a Toleman at the 1984 Italian Grand Prix, the inexper-ienced Martini suffered an appalling debut season in Formula One with the uncompetitive Minardi-Motori Moderni team. However, a step back to Formula 3000 saw him return in 1988 a changed man, and in 1989 he was at his best in Formula One, briefly leading the Portuguese Grand Prix and qualifying an amazing third in Australia. Following that he was consigned to the midfield, alternating between the Minardi and Scuderia Italia teams. Pierluigi missed the first half of 1993, when he was dropped by Scuderia Italia, but returned with Minardi until a cash crisis saw him dropped in the middle of 1995. Racing in sports cars brought him victory at Le Mans in 1999 with Yannick Dalmas and Jo Winkelhock in a works BMW.
