Roberto's arrival in Britain was an immediate hit in Formula Ford in 1978 and he came joint second overall in the 1980 Formula Three series behind Stefan Johansson.
Formula Two was not such a hit and, despite winning at Thruxton, Roberto ended up seventh overall in a year dominated by Geoff Lees. However, he had done enough to land a Formula One ride with Ensign for 1982. This was a foot in the door, but a move to the Theodore team for 1983 proved no more successful and so Roberto headed west for Indy Cars, anxious simply to have a car that stood a chance of winning.
Second in the 1984 Indy 500 behind Rick Mears, he won twice in 1987, but then crashed and went into a coma. Although he fought his way back to fitness, his form was never the same. Then, to everyone's delight, this charming individual stuck his car on pole for the Indy 500 in 1992, only to crash on the parade lap…
