Profile
Several seasons at the front end of the grid in the European Formula Three Championship in the late 1970s saw Mauro come on strong to win the prestigious Monaco Formula Three race in 1980. Electing to stay on for a fourth year of Formula Three in 1981, he won the European title and then bypassed Formula Two to join the Arrows Formula One team for 1982. His first points came at the Dutch Grand Prix. A move to the works Alfa Romeo team for 1983 was not a success, however, and Mauro was not invited to stay on, so found himself with the new Spirit team in 1984. This was floundering by early 1985, and since then Mauro has raced with great success in sports cars, winning the 1990 world title in a Sauber-run Mercedes. In 1994, Mauro won the Le Mans 24 Hours, sharing a Dauer Porsche with Yannick Dalmas and Hurley Haywood.
