Profile
For racing fans, the 1970s were dark days in Belgium as the beloved Spa-Francorchamps was out of favour, considered too dangerous. Zolder, in the flat, Flemish-speaking end of the country closer to Brussels, took over. It was narrow, tricky and undistinguished as it threaded its way through sandy woodland, its flow broken by the insertion of chicanes. Sadly, it's infamous as the track that claimed the life of Gilles Villeneuve in qualifying in 1982.
