Rosberg celebrates 'perfect lap'
Nico Rosberg said he put together the "perfect lap" to secure pole position, but is wary about getting too carried away ahead of Sunday's race.
Rosberg put in a remarkable lap to go 0.505s faster than anybody else in the final session of qualifying and secure the first pole of his F1 career.
Asked where he found the lap time, Rosberg said: "The track was cooling off a little bit and so the rear tyres started to work a little bit better. I changed the setup of the car slightly before the last run and just got a perfect lap so it worked out really, really well."
But Rosberg admitted Mercedes' qualifying pace has flattered to deceive so far this year as the team has struggled with high levels of tyre degradation in the race.
"For me this is the start of the season because the first two races haven't gone too well," he added. "It's not bad to start first and obviously that's fantastic, but of course it's pretty clear that in the race we have not been as good as in qualifying lately. We are working very hard to try and improve that, but it's not something that you can change in a few weeks, it's something that takes some time - but I think we're making good progress in the race and that's important.
"It's difficult to know exactly where we'll be tomorrow because the conditions are changing and if it becomes a little bit colder that might help us. I don't really know how it's going to go, I'm going to try my best and for sure I'll work hard tonight to try and do the final few details on the setup, electronically specifically, and then make the most of it."
Team principal Ross Brawn praised the middle sector of Rosberg's lap, but also sounded a note of caution over Mercedes' race pace.
"We've obviously got, at the back of our mind, that we've got to put a race together tomorrow," he told the BBC. "It was quite an exceptional lap by Nico. He hasn't had a great first couple of races in that respect and today we saw what he can do. The middle sector he did was just incredible."
