Jenson Button revealed that McLaren made an error in running in Q3 because he has unnecessarily put laps on his race tyres.

Having struggled to make it through in to the top ten shootout, Button had no new sets of supersoft tyres left available to him for the final qualifying session. As a result he went out to set a time on the harder of the two compounds, but said it was inevitable he would start in 10th place so he should have saved the tyres to start the race on a new set.

"We wanted to start the race on the prime tyre," Button said. "To be fair looking at it now we shouldn't have actually bothered running it because it was going to be tricky to beat anyone on the prime tyre. We had no new options left so we were going to be P10 on the option tyre so we thought we'd give it a go on the prime and start the race on prime. Maybe we shouldn't have put five laps on it, but you get in the car and you want to go out and see what you can do with the tyre so that's exactly what we did."

When asked if he was confident for Sunday Button admitted the qualifying mistake didn't help matters, but said he is hoping for the weather conditions to make the race unpredictable.

"Not entirely, no. I think today wasn't great but as I said maybe we shouldn't have put laps on the prime tyre because now we have five laps on the tyre starting the race and the guys behind me have brand new tyres so it's not the best way to start tomorrow. But it's going to be a very hot race and I think it's going to be probably the hottest race we've had this year so hopefully it will throw up a few surprises for everyone and we can still have a good afternoon."
