Profile

It seems inconceivable that Derek could spend ten years in Formula One and still not win a grand prix. Regarded as a better prospect than Nigel Mansell in the early stages of his career, he appeared to have success in his grasp when he was signed to replace Alain Prost at Renault in 1984. The French team was in terminal decline, however, and, when he was blocked from joining Lotus in 1986 by Ayrton Senna, he temporarily left Formula One, only to return, for Brabham, after the death of Elio de Angelis.

After three promising, but fruitless, years with Arrows, then an even worse one at Lotus, Derek quit Formula One for success in sports cars - in which he was World Champion in 1991 - before returning for another fruitless year with Footwork in 1993. But still the cards did not fall for him, and in 1994 Formula One passed him by. He later turned to the British Touring Car Championship becoming a race winner before concentrating on running the Vauxhall team.
