Sandro's Formula One career was cut short when an arm was severed in a helicopter accident. Micro-surgery reattached the limb, and amazingly he became a race-winner in the German Touring series. Given his chance in F1 with Minardi, he often out-paced Andrea de Cesaris before joining Benetton in 1988, partnering Thierry Boutsen. Nannini won in Japan in 1989 when Ayrton Senna was disqualified and he then came of age in the second part of 1990. He was pipped by Senna in Germany after a brilliant drive, and lost in Hungary after out-muscled by the Brazilian. After another sterling drive to third in Spain, and with a contract with Ferrari rumoured, came the helicopter crash.
